Choosing the right HVAC system for your home is important. It can also be a complex decision with many factors to consider such as budget, energy efficiency and the upcoming refrigerant changes.
Whether you’re installing a new system or replacing an old one, it’s important to select an option that meets your unique needs while ensuring comfort, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
Here are some key factors to help you make a well- informed decision.
Understand Your Home’s Climate and HVAC Needs
Your home’s climate and specific requirements play a significant role in choosing the right HVAC system.
Consider the size and layout of your home, the local climate, insulation quality, and the number of occupants.
These factors will influence the type of HVAC system you need, its size, and its capabilities.
Explore HVAC System Options
There are several types of HVAC systems available:
- Central air conditioning and heating is ideal for evenly distributing air in homes with duct work.
- Ductless mini-split systems are perfect for homes without ducts, offering efficient temperature control for individual rooms or zones.
- Heat pumps are an efficient option for climates with mild winters, providing both heating and cooling.
Each type is suited to different needs, and choosing the proper system is important.
Key HVAC Selection Factors
When choosing an HVAC system, consider energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and maintenance requirements.
Look for systems with high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) and HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) ratings to ensure energy efficiency.
Also, consider the overall costs, including installation and long-term energy costs, and choose a system that balances upfront costs with long-term savings.
The Importance of Maintenance and Professional Services
Proper installation, repair, and maintenance are very important to the performance and longevity of your HVAC system.
If you live in the Rowlett, Rockwall, Wylie, Murphy, Sachse, Lavon, or Plano, Texas areas, Martin Heating & Air offers expert services tailored to your needs.

Upcoming Changes in Refrigerants
Starting January 1, 2025, you won’t be able to buy new 410A systems anymore.
Only replacement parts will be available, and by 2026, you’ll only be able to get parts for 410A systems under warranty, and that’s just until the warranty expires.
Also, brace yourself for some price hikes: the cost of 410A refrigerant is expected to double in 2025 and triple by 2026!
In the past, the old R22 systems had some alternative refrigerants like 407c and MO99, but that’s not going to be the case moving forward.
Parts and equipment for older systems are quickly becoming obsolete.
On the bright side, new refrigerants like R32 and R454, along with compatible equipment, are being rolled out this fall and will be fully stocked by January 1, 2025.
If you’re thinking about upgrading, keep in mind that the new systems are expected to come with a price increase of around 8 to 12 percent.
As always, Martin Air and Heating will be upfront with the true costs when we quote you replacement pricing.
Existing systems are not affected by this regulation, but understanding these changes is important for anyone considering a new HVAC system.
